Reasons I Love Winnipeg/Canada #19: Nom Nom Nom...

Winnipeg, Canada Winnipeg is known for its diverse and numerous restaurants. If I had to choose, La Bamba is probably my favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. They have the best mojitos in the city, fresh guacamole that is to die for, and my favourite item on the menu is the chipotle enchiladas. Oh, and I can’t forget the irresistible tequila ice cream. I always leave satisfied, food baby preceding me. As someone who lived in Mexico for 4 months and has countless Mexican friends, I like to think I know my way around good Mexican food, so you should trust me on this. Lately, as I’ve been driving around Waterloo, I’ve seen plenty of restaurants I’ll have to try and pubs I’ll have to visit. Several of those restaurants have (surprisingly or not) been Mexican. Each...

Reasons I Love Winnipeg/Canada #18: Folklorama (Two)...

Look! Irish people! In theory, you can attend three different pavilions in one night at Folklorama. The risk you run in doing this is not getting to the second or third pavilion in time to get a good spot in line, and you might not even get in. This happened when we went from the Indo-Caribbean pavilion to the Irish pavilion. We showed up to the Irish pavilion, traditionally a very popular one, and the lineup stretched down the sidewalk and well past the building. Of course you can pay for VIP treatment and beat the lines, but it’s not the most cost effective option for everyone. They gave us the choice to wait for the next show in the downstairs of the building where there is a cultural display and a bar. Colin...

Reasons I Love Winnipeg/Canada #18: Folklorama (One)...

Winnipeg, Canada  Every summer, people from all over the world are drawn to Winnipeg for Folklorama, a celebration of nations and the diversity of Canada. Winnipeg in particular has a varied population of immigrants, and this is evidenced in our celebration of this annual festival. Last week, I went with Saj, my oldest friend David, and my two new immigrant friends from Ireland, Claire and Colin, to Folklorama. The number of pavilions to choose from can seem endless. Do we go to the Chilean pavilion, the Russian pavilion, the Polish pavilian, the Ukrainian pavilion, the Portuguese pavilion, the Tamil pavilion..? Our choice was made simple by two factors: what we wanted to eat, and the cultures represented by our little group. We chose the Indo-Caribbean pavilion for the delicious roti and because Saj is...

You’ve Gotta Go (Reasons I Love Winnipeg/Canada #16)...

Lockport, Manitoba Grand Beach, Manitoba Manitoba is highly underrated. There are so many delightful little spots just a short drive away. Lockport, Manitoba is a place my family has been visiting for years. The draw? The Half Moon, an old style diner, with the best hot dogs and onion rings for miles. Not much farther is Grand Beach, where Saj and I went to meet his friends for the day. We spent the day on the delicate white sand, sharing beers, caesars, swish (a mystery concoction), and far too many laughs to count. In my opinion, nothing quite compares to going to the lake, but having such a nice beach so close to home, I consider myself lucky. Having such wonderful people to share the time with, I consider myself even luckier. If and...

Reasons I love Winnipeg/Canada #15...

I have been driving by these signs for years now, every time I go to the lake. I finally, finally, stopped to take some photos. In other news, I was supposed to be in Brasil right now. My planned departure date of April 19th has come and gone. Instead of moping around and being a total dope about the situation, I’ve instead chosen to fill my plate with lots of stuff to keep me excited for the coming months. 1. Work I have a job! Needless to say, all the money I earn is going towards my next trip. I hope to settle the plans of this in the next month. 2. Early Morning Yoga Every day this week, at 6:45 am, I am going to yoga with my mum. Today was the first...
