Reflecting On A Few Things: School Is Winter...

Feb 5, 2015 by

As of today, I have been back at school for a month. After an epic year off, I’m back at it. You’d think I’d have written a lot more about it by now, but the reality is that I’m keeping the details of this transition mostly to myself. As I get older, sharing less is becoming my comfort zone. I have a few theories as to why, and even those, I will keep to myself. I will just say this. School is winter. Last week, the chill got to me. It is much more damp here than the dry (though snowy) winters I get in Winnipeg. With the whipping wind, and the bit of moisture in the cold air, I...

Reflecting On A Few Things: Optometry School Is Like…...

Nov 20, 2013 by

At the beginning of my first year in optometry school last September, one of the upper years told me, “Optometry is like jail. You have to do your time, but you will get out.” It wasn’t until this year that I understood firsthand what he was telling me. Optometry at Waterloo is a four year program, and I am almost finished my first term of second year. At this point in the program, I feel like I am in the middle of a gymnastics foam pit, trying to climb through and over piles of mushy foam to get out. It’s not easy. I might have landed a perfect spinning, tumbling leap to get into the pit, but getting out is another consideration altogether. I don’t write this to complain or speak negatively of...

This is what I’m thinking… San Francisco, USA Buenos Aires, Argentina Madrid, Spain San Francisco, USA Mariposa Grove, USA Kenora, Canada San Francisco, USA …and this is what you should know… In three weeks from today, I’m moving away. I’m packing my car till it is busting, and I’m hitting the road. I’m moving to Waterloo for four life changing years of study, new friendships and travel, always travel. I will always blog and write about my travels, but what I want you to understand is that this blog was started first and foremost to keep in touch with friends and family while I am away. It is my medium to tell them what I’m doing, share pictures and stories and let them know I’m still alive. Since I am once again moving away,...

Reflecting on a few things… #2 (and some news!)...

Mar 13, 2012 by

Santiago, Chile Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Chicago, USA Chicago, USA Sooke Harbour House, BC, Canada Vancouver, Canada Niteroi, Brasil Backstage – Chihuahua, Mexico Well friends, the time has come: I know where I will be living come September. The news came much quicker than I had anticipated, but it was more than well received on my hyperventilating, sobbing, relieved end. I have lots to do and prepare before I go, and I daresay that my travel plans this spring may have been altered by reasons unrelated to this news I am so eager to share. In the meantime, as I reflect on last week and all its events and all that is to come for me, I am going to drop a few hints. Hint...

Tonight, as I get nice and cozy with 20 of biochemistry’s favourite amino acids, I also share a little facebook banter with a Mexican friend of mine, Daniel, who I met in 2008 in Mexico City, better known as D.F. He is good friends with my dear friend Ruben, my original Mexican friend I met while I was living in England in 2004. We’ve kept in touch ever since.  Kathy’s house, Newmarket, England A Manitoban in Lavenham, England Cream tea in Lavenham Segovia, Spain My Dream House (read: HEAPS of books), Leiden, the Netherlands Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain Madrid, Spain Madrid, Spain While I hung out with Ruben and his friends in D.F, his friend Daniel entertained me on numerous occasions by whipping out his guitar and playing some Smashing...
