Reasons I Love Winnipeg/Canada #20: Street Meat
The banana peppers, the horseradish, the ketchup, the mustard, the pickles, the onions, the bacon bits, the relish, the olives… The spicy Italian sausage, the all beef sausage, the Polish sausage, the smokie… the combinations and deliciousness are nearly endless. One hot dog, two hot dogs, three hot dogs… You can pretty much go mental over this ubiquitous Toronto specialty.
I remember the first time I tried the Toronto Street Meat. It was in 2007 for a student conference, and ever since that first bite, I haven’t looked back. Every time I’m in Toronto, I try to make a point of having a big, giant hot dog from a street vendor.
When I was in Toronto for Anishka’s engagement party, one of the first things I did when I got off the bus was head to a hot dog cart. The next morning, after a night of Indian extravagances and drinking and dancing and fine catered food, all I wanted was more street meat.
Yes, I had two that trip.
