What’s The Big Hairy Deal?...

  Just under 5 years ago, I went from long curly locks and fringe to this in a matter of moments:     I had always wanted to try short hair before I finally went for the big chop, and I wanted to do it while I was young, since short hair seems to be the go-to cut for women of a certain age. Leave it to me to be contrary. It is kind of weird to look at these pictures because despite having wanted short hair and having kept it for many months, I don’t think of myself as a short hair gal. Map On My Wall

  I put a map on my wall this past week. It was going to cost $249 to have it framed, so I taped it. I then put little red stickers to mark off where I’ve been. Some cities and places weren’t listed so I had to guess. I stepped back and looked at those little dots. After more than ten years of travel and over 40 countries visited (some of them more than once), my map looked kind of empty. People always tell me I’ve travelled so much. It’s true, I have. Yet, it’s insatiable. This isn’t a glass/map half full or half empty scenario. It’s a fact – there is much of the world I’ve yet to see, so much I still crave. “Things are getting better,” he said. Several empty beer bottles sat on the table in front of us. A trail of smoke rose from his cigarette leaning nonchalantly in the ashtray. I could just make out the clinking of the chips from our backgammon game over the sounds of the jungle and the sporadic downpours around us. I took a sip of my beer, the bottle sweating profusely in my hand.
