What’s The Big Hairy Deal?...

Aug 1, 2015 by

Just under 5 years ago, I went from long curly locks and fringe to this in a matter of moments:     I had always wanted to try short hair before I finally went for the big chop, and I wanted to do it while I was young, since short hair seems to be the go-to cut for women of a certain age. Leave it to me to be contrary. It is kind of weird to look at these pictures because despite having wanted short hair and having kept it for many months, I don’t think of myself as a short hair gal. That girl almost doesn’t look like me. The original haircut was inspired by Carey Mulligan and this cute ‘do. Since my head/face is not the same shape as hers, my hair dresser...

Girl Goes To Russia

May 23, 2015 by

I haven’t been on the subtle side of describing how difficult my trip through Russia was back in 2013. When I think back on that trip, the feelings are not warm or fond. I felt relief to leave the country, and I hold firmly that I will likely never go back. The logic is that there are too many places to visit and far too little time in one life, so while I don’t argue there is no value in travel to Russia, it is not where my travel priorities lie. I want to see Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Japan… I want to see Mauritius, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa… I want to see more of South America… I want to go back to Spain, Denmark, Ireland, India. There is too much world...

Special Places: U Olgi

Mar 18, 2015 by

When I look at the map on my wall, I can’t believe the places I’ve been. Yes, much of Africa and Asia remain bare, and still there is so so much of Central and South America I am dying to see, but I’ve been to some pretty neato places and done some pretty neato things. I’ve done cartwheels in front of the moai of Easter Island, I celebrated Holi with Indian kids in Mumbai, and I went for a couple of body-numbing dips in Lake Baikal. Almost daily, I’m plagued with the thought of all the things I want to do and see and experience; life is just so short. “So many trips, so little time,” I quite often lament to my boyfriend. Despite that, I remain firm in my gratitude for what is...

All The Liebe

Jan 14, 2015 by

Wow! If I’ve done my math correctly (and we should never trust my mental math), this is the third time I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Blog Award. Last year, I was nominated twice and answered 22 questions in one go, and this year, Kristen from A Gypsy Breeze put me in her list of nominees. I’m going to break the rules here and not nominate anyone or come up with my own questions (only because I’ve done these relay type posts a number of times) but I will answer the questions! Just a little gratuitous rambling. Here are the 11 questions. 1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Lord have mercy on us all right now. I’ve lived in Canada (Winnipeg and Waterloo), and I’ve lived in...

I Ate It In Russia

Dec 14, 2014 by

While preparing a handful of photo albums recently, I ended up sifting through my pictures from Russia and realized I haven’t shared all the meals I had there. I can’t believe it’s been over a year since that trip – almost a year and a half, really! As such, I will do my best to remember the details. What stands out most when I think about the Russian food I had was that it was not very good, and it was kind of expensive. I did not find Russia to be a foodie paradise, and after a lot of misses early on in the trip, my travel partner and I often opted to buy vegetables and beer at a supermarket and cook at our hostel. Our lazy-lady salads ended up being much more reliable than...
